April 2007 - Florence, Italy - The Food

We had so many wonderful meals in Florence, but here are the main highlights.

Perhaps our favorite meals in Florence were at the pizza shop on Via dei Neri. We love this family owned pizzeria which seems to be always open and always serving fresh, crunchy square slices.Osteria Benci, right down the street from our apartment, turned out to be our favorite restaurant for casual dining. The menu is very basic Florentine fare and very reasonably priced.
As a farewell to Florence our classmates took us out for dinner and Kenny had the best vongole of his life. He says it's the most clams he has ever had in one dish, at least 3 times the amount that other restaurants serve. This was at the Ristorante Benvenuto also very close to our apartment. Saving the best for last - on my birthday, Casandra took him to the finest restaurant in Florence and perhaps Europe - Enoteca Pinchiori. With one of the most creative menus imaginable and one of the largest wine cellars in Europe, it was nothing short of spectacular and most deserving of its 3 Michelin stars. Though I've been accused of overusing superlatives, I can't resist saying that it was one of the best dining experience of our lives, second only to the place we went to and raved about in Modena - Osteria Francescana (with only 2 stars).

Enoteca was much more modern looking than we expected and the presentation was absolutely gorgeous with rectangular glass plates or big white dishes creatively arranged. The appetizer course was a buid-your-own pate bruschetta. The pasta course was decadent with creamy truffle sauce drizzled on everything. The main course was a delicious filet and potatoes with fried turnips. The food was ecclectic and international --a much needed break from everyday italian food.We had a wonderful elaborate dessert course after we sang Happy Birthday or Auguri a te to Kenny.
Finally, one last course of dessert.
